Program:

Debussy/Sachs - Prelude L'apres midi d'un faune
Copland - Appalachian Spring

Richard Strauss - Sextet from Capriccio

Neither too big, nor too small, this ensemble concert features a dozen+ of the North State Symphony’s finest players in music specially adapted for intimate performance.

“This great piece of music, Appalachian Spring, actually exists in two versions”, said Pickett. “Copland originally composed it to accompany dancers from the Martha Graham modern dance company. In the original version there are only 13 players plus the conductor, and that makes it perfect for us.”

Appalachian Spring famously includes the old folk hymn “Simple Gifts” and is often played in a later version for large orchestra. Like other Copland pieces, it brings a recognizably American sound to concert halls that had mostly featured European music before Copland’s time.

Also on the program are Debussy’s famous Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, as arranged for a large chamber ensemble like Copland’s, and a “beautiful and lyrical” excerpt for string sextet from an opera,  Capriccio, by Richard Strauss.
